My friend Tara posed an interesting insight to thrifting in her comment. Do any of you feel the same?
"I LOVE your thrifting and it has really inspired me to do it. My only hold up is I have a thing about how clean the stuff is and who once wore it. So do you have any suggestions on how to get over this, and have you had any problems with this?"
It doesn't bother me enough to stop me, but I do get where you're coming from. I recommend washing everything you buy right when you get home. Be sure to check whether it is Dry Clean Only before you buy it so you can decide if that is going to be worth the extra cost of getting it Dry Cleaned. If it's jewelry- take some rubbing alcohol and clean the area that will be touching your skin, or just use soap and water.
As far as who wore it- the stuff I buy mostly belonged to old ladies, I'm sure, and they are usually really good to keep their things in good condition. It's like a vintage piece of furniture; it's old and used to belong to someone else, but that's part of what makes it awesome!
It also helps the earth because we are recycling clothes instead of throwing them away for "new" stuff. Okay, maybe that one was a stretch, but it's true! And I do look at it that way.
Also- I'm looking for guest posts! Your whole outfit doesn't have to be thrifted, either. If you have some awesome thrifted shoes then show us how you work it into your store-bought outfit.
Thanks, good to know. I will be checking out the local thrft stores soon! Will let you know how it goes!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes have hangups about thrifted clothes too but so often I find things that are BRAND NEW with tags on still! Whoop! You an usually tell just by looking at something how well taken care of it was and I obviously don't buy things that are too worn, stained, smell (ew) or dirty. I love of good thrift, there is something about it that just brings a big smile to my face. Lately, I am into thrifted frames, repurposing them and furniture too, so clothes are the only things that are fun to thrift!
